LibreOffice Hackfest at Hamburg

Thanks to CIB, who sponsored the event with their office location, drinks and food, we again had a LibreOffice Hackfest at Hamburg on Saturday/Sunday October 24/25, and a get-together on Friday evening with the opportunity to meet also some long time colleagues from Sun and Star.

My timeline:

  • followed a nice introduction to the help authoring extension held by Regina Henschel, for how to install and use it see the documentation in the wiki
  • changed our own implementation of rtl_math_{erf,erfc} to follow the C++11 standard's specification for input of Inf and NaN
  • added unit tests for rtl_math_{erf,erfc,expm1,log1p}
  • replaced implementation of rtl_math_{erf,erfc} with ::std::{erf,erfc}
  • attended a Gerrit inline editing introduction by David Ostrovsky (yet another time his favorite feature ;)
  • replaced implementation of rtl_math_{expm1,log1p} with ::std::{expm1,log1p}
  • dug with Regina into the help authoring extension to spot a place for switching the license text written based on the difference between existing and new file, but the convoluted agglomeration of template, fields, Basic and XSLT and the license text being an XML comment in .xhp didn't offer a quick and easy to spot solution, Kendy please take over ;)

But, as usual no new hacker was interested in diving into Calc core code.. maybe you at one of the next Hackfests?

Windows in public transport

Windows in public transport screen systems, always good for a laugh:
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file F:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save the file elsewhere.

Using Windows for public transport screen systems: "Windows was unable ..."

Oh yes, and of course it is waiting for OK confirmation. Maybe better use a capable operating system...

Bürgerschaftswahl in Hamburg

Seilbahn? Echt? Nee, lass man..

Hamburg dangerous jungle folks

A few days ago the United States Diplomatic Mission issued a Security Message for U.S. Citizens about the Establishment of a Restricted Zone in Hamburg after some police crackdown short before Christmas. Warnings included

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations or public gatherings, especially in the restricted areas, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

Well, this is what you could had encountered if you disregarded the warning on Friday evening when a public gathering escalated into a heavy pillow fight on Spielbudenplatz at the famous Reeperbahn no-go area:

Watching carefully you may notice spurious waving and fierce shaking of toilet brushes, the dangerous weapon and brutal symbol of the Hamburg riots.

Titanenwurzblüte, blooming titan arum, Amorphophallus titanum

Yesterday night we had the privilege to see a blooming titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum), the largest flower on Earth, in the botanical garden's greenhouse at Planten un Blomen, a nearby park in the center of Hamburg. Privilege because it took years to start blooming and already the same night it collapsed again. The titan arum is also known as the corpse flower or stinky plant, and it really deserves the name, it smells like rotting meat to attract beetles for its pollination.

A historical illustration from Kosmos Handweiser für Naturfreunde 1934 depicts how large this flower could grow, the one we saw reached "only" 163cm.

The website of the Botanic Garden Hamburg has some more pictures of the progress since July 2, additional information in German can be found there.

Also the United States Botanic Garden at Washington D.C. expects a titan arum to bloom about every day now.

Update:
There's a time lapse video of the Hamburg titanum blooming.
The U.S. Botanic Garden one bloomed July 21st to 22nd and there's also a time lapse video. Very pretty.
